Motorola ROKR E8 on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10, Karmic)

To sync your MUSIC (videos, potos): in your phone, go to Main Menu > Settings > Connections > USB Setting and select Memory Card.

Plug your phone to the computer, and it will show up as 2.1gb file-system. Browse and upload/remove music and other media.

To retrieve and backup your contacts and SMS-messages, install Wammu from the Ubuntu software Centre.

Before starting the application, go again to Main Menu > Settings > Connections > USB Setting and now select Modem. Plug your phone into the PC.

Start Wammu and accept the wizard. Choose Guided Configuration (next) Motorola phone (next) AT based (next) Generic (next) and from the drop-down menu select /dev/ttyACM0. If you don't see a drop-down menu (or it's grey), check that your phone is connected to the computer and start again. It should work.

Eventually, you should see a message that the phone is connected.

The Retrieve menu will give you all contacts and sms-messages, with the option to export/back them up.

You can also enter new contacts through Wammu into the phone.

To send SMS-messages via computer, install Kmobiletools.
Main settings
Device menu
Mobile device select: /dev/ttyACM0
Text encoding: GSM
(leave the rest as it is)

Mobile phone menu:
Phone type: Generic GSM device
Dialling options: ATD dial system
(leave the rest as it is)

Click ok, and it should work. With this app you can call and send sms-messages via your computer.
Also, if you install Kaddressbook, you have have all your telephone contacts synced with it and eventually export as vCard, CSV and other formats.

Have fun!

Thanks for this posting! I

Thanks for this posting! I run Karmic on my laptop, and was sorely disappointed when I couldn't get my e8 to connect.. didn't realize it had everything to do with the connection settings - now it works like a charm. Your post is the only (helpful) information I've found.

this did not helped me as i

I really wouldn't know about

I really wouldn't know about Windows, to be honest. I am using it on a Linux machine only. I wasn't even aware that they make a windows version. Maybe someone with a know-how can jump in?
